Came good in the end
Tuesday 2 November, 2004, 16:02
The afternoon of December 10th brought back the local derby game between Solihull and Coventry in the u19s north division 2. In what posed to be an exciting end to end hockey game, Coventry eventually came out victorious. The game began in typical derby style, aggressive and fast paced, with neither team wanting to concede the 1st goal. Both teams took early penalties and it was Solihull who drew first blood with a sloppy goal that in any other game wouldn’t have gone in. This put Coventry behind for the 1st time this season. Blaze never showed there superiority throughout the first period as in previous games. They did equalise though at 12:01 through an individual effort from Tom Pease. This lifted the Blaze and got them back in a game they couldn’t lose. Just seconds later Solihull took the lead at 12:28 with a slightly controversial goal. The referee signaling a delayed penalty and even after the Coventry goalie touched the puck still didn’t blow. The period ended with the score 2-1 in Solihull’s favour. After some stern words from the coach in the interval, Blaze came out stronger in the second. They dominated at times and controlled the end zone well but couldn’t find the net. Tom Pease scored another crucial goal at 28:14 and leveled the game at 2-2. Blaze started to show why they are 7-0 so far this season but still weren’t at their best. Some sloppy play in neutral ice gifted Solihull the puck and opportunities to go infront. The period ended with the game tied 2-2. Coventry came out in the third with only one intention, to win the game no matter what. They dominated the whole ice and Solihull rarely got out of their zone. Blaze’s more senior players stepped up and showed some class, the team pulled together and went in front through the ever impressive Luke Curtis at 48:55. This put blaze on the front foot and they didn’t stop the pressure. They continued to attack with Solihull only having 2 shots on the Coventry netminder. Blaze put the game out of reach at 57:36 with a shot from James Feenan that hit a Coventry stick on the way to the top corner of the Solihull net. The goal was later credited to Joe Henry with James picking up the assist. Man of the match went to Coventry netminder Hayden Laverick and a special mention goes to Lee Winwood, Adam Richardson, Ross Pink and Carl Green supporting the Blaze from the u16s and putting in solid shifts when called upon. All in all, a lacklustre performance by the top of the league team that nearly caused an upset. Although a win is indeed a win in the conquest for promotion. Reporter Ian Hunt Captin
